Individual Therapy in New York

When understanding yourself isn’t quite enough to change the pattern

You might know you’re overthinking. You might understand why you have a hard time saying no, or recognize the relationship dynamic you keep getting pulled into. Yet, in the moment, you find yourself reacting the same way.

Individual therapy is a place to get curious about what’s underneath these reactions and begin responding with more choice.

Maybe nothing is terribly wrong. You just know something could feel different.

You can be capable, self-aware, and good at handling a lot, and still have places where you feel surprisingly stuck.

Maybe you replay conversations long after they’re over. You say yes when you want to say no, then feel resentful. You know someone else’s disappointment isn’t yours to fix, but it still feels incredibly uncomfortable to let them have it.

Or maybe you’ve already spent a lot of time understanding yourself. You know where some of this comes from. You just don’t want insight to be the end of the story.

What might bring you to therapy

Anxiety + overthinking

When your mind keeps looking for certainty, even after you know you’ve thought something through enough.

People-pleasing + boundaries

When you know what you want to say, but someone else’s disappointment makes it hard to say it.

Perfectionism + self-criticism

When your standards help you accomplish a lot but make it difficult to ever feel like you’ve done enough.

Relationships + recurring dynamics

When you notice yourself becoming anxious, withdrawing, overfunctioning, or falling into familiar dynamics.

Trauma + painful experiences

When something you’ve been through continues to shape how you see yourself, your relationships, or how you respond in the present.

Life + identity transitions

When something has changed, whether that is parenthood, work, relationships, loss, or simply who you are, and you’re trying to figure out what comes next.

A little curiosity can go a long way

There’s usually
a reason you do
what you do.

The overthinking may be trying to keep you from making a mistake. People-pleasing may have helped you stay connected to people who mattered. Perfectionism may have become a way of feeling competent, valued, or in control.

Instead of treating these reactions as things you simply need to stop doing, we’ll get curious about why they’re there.

Because when you understand what’s underneath a reaction, you have more room to decide what you actually want to do next.

What therapy with me is like

You probably don’t need someone to simply tell you to set better boundaries, stop overthinking, or be kinder to yourself. Chances are, you’ve thought about some of that already.

Therapy with me is curious, active, and collaborative. We might slow down what happens right before you shut down in a conversation, get curious about why someone else’s disappointment feels so uncomfortable, or notice what that critical voice is actually trying to accomplish.

I’ll ask questions, make connections, and tell you what I’m noticing. Sometimes I’ll gently challenge you. And sometimes we’ll realize that the thing you’ve been trying so hard to change makes a lot more sense once we understand where it came from.

The goal isn’t to analyze yourself endlessly. It’s to understand yourself well enough that you have more choice in the moments that matter.

Therapy shaped around what you need

There isn’t one way into a problem, and there isn’t one way through it. Our work may draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy, IFS-informed parts work, psychodynamic therapy, CBT and DBT, mindfulness, and other evidence-based approaches.

You don’t need to know which approach you need before you walk in. We’ll pay attention to what’s actually happening for you and use what helps us understand it, and change it.

Understand what’s underneath

Explore where reactions, beliefs, and relationship dynamics come from, what keeps them going, and what they may be doing for you.

Work with what happens in the moment

Notice thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and interpersonal reactions as they’re actually happening, not just in retrospect.

Practice something different

Turn insight into new ways of responding, to yourself, to other people, and to situations that used to pull you into the same familiar place.

Curious whether we might be a good fit?

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. We can talk briefly about what’s bringing you to therapy, what you’re looking for, and whether working together feels like the right next step.
